Vanguard's Total (stock) Market Fund, VTI, has become my favorite for analysis of market action and for short to intermediate term trading. http://seekingalpha.com/article/2548165-the-best-core-equity-holding-for-your-etf-portfolio
VTI holds nearly every US stock trading on an exchange, unlike the popular indexes. This includes small cap and micro-cap stocks.
For 24 hour pricing and long term analysis, the S&P500 index futures still top all, but VTI gives a clearer picture at important junctures.
Currently some indices are making new highs and some are not. After a long run up stocks overall need to break out in a major way on the upside or take and intermediate or longer rest.
This past week VTI has resisted breaking up through it's nine month upper trend line. I've been putting a day only limit buy stop above the trend line if I'm unable to watch the market toward the close.
